A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

At least 64 people died in a police operation cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were arrested.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the main base of a major illegal networks.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have compared the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, in addition to dozens of firearms.

The coordinated mission by civil and military police comes after a extended probe.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
