American Brokers Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi as White House Pushes for Conflict Resolution

Diplomatic negotiations including American, Russian, and Ukrainian representatives commenced in Abu Dhabi this week, representing the most recent phase in attempts to forge a peace agreement to end the continuing hostilities in Ukraine.

High-Level Representatives and Initial Discussions

American military Secretary the US representative reportedly held talks with a Moscow team on Monday night, with dialog continuing into the following day.

“The talks are going well and we remain optimistic. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronised with the White House ... as these talks progress,” his spokesperson commented.

The Ukrainian military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, was scheduled to join in the proceedings, though it remained unclear whether direct engagement with Russian delegates would happen or if distinct one-on-one sessions would be held.

Membership of the Moscow delegation was unconfirmed. “I have nothing to say. We are following the media reports,” a Kremlin spokesperson told state media.

Context and Revised Proposal

These meetings follow prior negotiations in a European nation where American and Kyiv officials revised a draft American plan for ending the war.

Moscow has so far not approved the latest draft of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv revisions.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, emphasized that any revised peace plan must embody the “essence and wording” of what was discussed during previous summit talks between the two nations.

Global Responses and Concerns

European officials are apparently struggling to stay engaged in the process as American representatives drive the efforts.

Finland’s leader, a European figure, who has stepped forward as a primary interlocutor between the US and European officials, commented that the next few days would be crucial in efforts to secure a peace settlement.

He reportedly spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato representatives, stating that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and European security is for Europe to decide.”

At the same time, the French president, the French official, warned against a peace deal that would represent a “capitulation” for the nation.

“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. However, must Kyiv and European nations consent to these terms? The answer is no,” he declared.

Specifics of the Initial American Plan

The US proposal was originally made up of 28 points and was based on dialog between US and Russian officials, with contributions from Kyiv security authorities.

Major aspects of the proposal reportedly involved:

  • Ukraine surrendering land currently held by Moscow
  • Further regions that might be required to be willingly surrendered
  • Restrictions on the size of the military forces
  • Amnesty for all parties in the conflict regarding war crimes

Latest Developments and Ongoing Challenges

American representative reportedly traveled to the Ukrainian capital to inform Zelenskyy on the proposal and demand rapid approval.

The pressure, combined with the disclosure of the plan, apparently shocked Ukrainian and European officials.

Zelenskyy stated that the country was facing one of the toughest periods in its existence and was being compelled to decide between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”

Subsequently, the US official briefed alliance ambassadors on the proposal in the capital, with one participant describing it as “a disastrous gathering” and noting that EU ambassadors were stunned by both the substance and tone of the delivery.

Washington later moderated its stance, indicating that the 28-point proposal was an “opening point for discussion” rather than a definitive ultimatum.

Military Situation During Negotiations

While peace talks continue, Russian forces has maintained its regular attacks on Ukrainian urban centers.

Russian forces reportedly launched numerous of missiles and many of drones at targets in and around Kyiv, as stated by Ukrainian reports.

Zelenskyy stressed that the Kremlin must not believe it could win the war while negotiations were ongoing.

“Crucially, all allies must advance toward diplomacy collectively, with unified action. Measures against Russia need to produce tangible effects,” he stated.

Kyiv’s leader confirmed that seven people had been killed in the overnight attack on the city.
