Anthony Barry Reveals The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, Barry was playing in League Two. Today, his attention is fixed supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His club career included elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach feature psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We have to play an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We have to spend time in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff but not Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
