Bellingham Must Cut Out the Immature behavior to Reclaim a Key Role Under Tuchel.

Should Bellingham hopes to fight his way into the English top starting eleven, he would be wise to do away with the unnecessary reactions. His response when he saw that his number was about to come up after a match of mixed performance in Tirana was unacceptable.

"I’d rather not overstate it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the teammates who enter the game," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it being a professional."

The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for an outburst. The captain had just put the Three Lions leading by two in an inconsequential qualifier, there were six minutes left and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, received a caution for a foul on the Albanian striker. It was not a controversial substitution. Actually it might have been reckless for Tuchel to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that it was possible he would rule himself out of the opening game of the World Cup by getting a second yellow card.

Turning the Spotlight Upon Himself

Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the player's frustration upon understanding that his replacement was ready for another player. He threw his arms up and while he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the touchline it was obvious that the head coach was displeased.

This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Harry Kane to score his second goal, but his other actions was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. Tuchel has stressed repeatedly following squad protocols and the value of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

He, omitted from the team last month, has been under scrutiny since coming back to the fold in the current camp. Practically he was being assessed and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to coming off the pitch as the national team wrapped up a ideal group stage by seeing off a spirited effort from Albania.

The System and the Setup

As a result the jury is out on if the team operate most effectively with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was inconclusive. Tuchel tried new things from Tuchel in the beginning. Under him, England have gained England structure and clarity over the past few matches, using a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a playmaker and dedicated wide players, but the approach changed against Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, Wharton started for the first time internationally and the use of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder meant there was passing resemblance to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham had ups and downs. He created an opportunity for his teammate after the break but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder in the early stages. England's play was messy for much of the second half. One Albania chance came after Bellingham gave the ball away. His caution came after he lost the ball to Broja and fouled the attacker.

Squad Strength Shows

In the end England’s depth proved crucial. Tuchel introduced the Manchester City player, who seemed more comfortable to the position in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. In time Saka provided a corner kick for the captain to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role at the World Cup.

Connection Remains

Nevertheless, all talk was about Bellingham. The quality of Rashford’s assist for the second goal was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, the focus was on the midfielder. Tuchel walked up from behind and directed the Real Madrid midfielder in the direction of the away supporters. The bond between them remains intact. The coach isn't ready to discard him at this stage. But if Tuchel is inclined to grant him centre stage remains in doubt.
