The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A recent term surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to treat a young patient who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities has denied these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
